Landfill Communities Fund

The Landfill Communities Fund is a scheme for funding community and environmental projects, predominantly within ten miles of landfill sites. Up to October 2006, it was known as the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

Since 1996 landfill operators have had to pay tax on every tonne of waste they dispose of, the idea being to encourage everyone to create less waste and to recycle or reuse more. Fortunately, they are allowed to give part of their landfill tax to certain types of good causes.

These gifts are managed through distributive environmental bodies such as Viridor Credits, which have considerable freedom on how they allocate their funds, within the rules of the scheme. We have chosen to support three types of projects, as long as they are located fairly close to one of Viridor’s landfills. They are the

  • Provision or maintenance of public amenities
  • Conservation or promotion of biological diversity through
    • the provision, conservation, restoration or enhancement of a natural habitat
      or
    • the maintenance or recovery of a species or its habitat on land or water
  • Maintenance, restoration or renovation of buildings of historical or architectural importance or those used for religious worship, provided they offer public access

We like to receive applications from groups, organisations, and projects that might find it difficult to obtain funding from other grant schemes. In particular, we look for projects that provide wide community use and therefore give best value for the funds we have available.  Please call Viridor Credits to receive more information on funding.
