Explaining our world
Environmental Body (EB)
This is an organisation or community group that is eligible for landfill tax funding. Registering as an Environmental Body is a quick and simple process but many organisations who are seeking LCF funding prefer to work through existing, experienced Environmental Bodies such as ourselves, Viridor Credits.
Distributive Environmental Body (DEB)
Distributive Environmental Bodies are those bodies which receive a direct donation of landfill tax credits from a landfill operator, in our case from Viridor.
ENTRUST
The people who regulate the Landfill Communities Fund. One of its jobs is to maintain a list of Environmental Bodies, who play an important role in the distribution of Landfill Communities Fund grants. ENTRUST does not make value judgements about any of the schemes that apply for grants. It cannot insist that any particular project gets the money it is after, or stop any eligible project from receiving funds.
Landfills
Not just holes in the ground where rubbish is tipped, modern landfills are fully engineered. This means that before any rubbish is tipped they are lined with special clays or heavy plastic sheeting or both so that the tipped rubbish does not contaminate the land under the waste. Completed sites are sealed with further heavy plastic sheeting, top soil and planted for conservation and leisure use.
Landfill gas
This is a natural result of rubbish decomposing in a landfill site. It is mostly composed of the gas methane. Most landfill gas is collected and harnessed to provide electricity.
